I am not sure where I found this recipe but it was suggested that it opens and clears plaque from the arteries of the heart. If you search for this you’ll probably find lots of ‘fact checkers’ telling you it’s a load of bunkum. And who knows – maybe it is. But all I can tell you is I use this concoction twice a year: Spring and Autumn Equinox – and a recent heart scan showed I had zero thickening of my arteries and no atherosclerosis.
Is it because of this? I couldn’t tell you. I have a family history of heart disease though. My cardiologist simply said “I guess you got the good genes.”
To be fair, I do eat well and look after myself, don’t smoke, don’t drink to excess, am not overweight, and I exercise moderately. At the time of writing I’m 58. My little brother, as regular readers will know, died of a sudden heart attack at 53. All four grandparents died of heart attacks – one at 60 but the others well into their 80s.
Whether it works to clear plaque from arteries or not, the ingredients are all super good for you and have been used for millennia to fight infection – each individually contain compounds linked to proven health benefits.
Garlic – the active compounds can reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels(1)
Apple Cider Vinegar – may aid in lowering blood sugar levels, reducing cholesterol levels, and aiding in weight loss(2)
Raw honey – may help lower blood pressure, improve blood fat levels, regulate your heartbeat, and prevent the death of healthy cells(3)
So … here we go.
To your heart health!
Ingredients:
- 8 cloves of fresh garlic
- 1 cup (200mL) unfiltered, unpasteurised organic apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup (200mL) of raw, unpasteurised honey
- Small piece of ginger (optional)
I get my honey from a local beekeeper. Shop bought honey won’t be suitable for this recipe.
Directions:
Mix all the ingredients in a blender at high speed for 45-60 seconds.
I have a Bullet processor so I chop the garlic first and give it a whiz to chop it fine – you could also use a garlic crusher first – then add the ACV and honey and blend for another 30 seconds.
Pour the mixture into a glass, sealable jar and keep in the fridge. It is ready to use in five days. Stir occasionally every day.
How to take it:
Immediately on waking and before eating or drinking anything take two tablespoons of the mixture. Frankly I can’t take that much so I just take one. If you don’t like the taste you can mix it with a cup of water or fresh juice. Regardless, the key is to take it immediately after waking and before eating or drinking.
Apple Cider Vinegar has been known to cause problems with the enamel on teeth so I usually rinse my mouth with water so the mixture isn’t stuck to my teeth.
