April 22 is Earth Day – which has been going since 1970 as the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, USA, a staunch environmentalist who hoped to provide unity to the grassroots environmental movement and increase ecological awareness.
“The objective was to get a nationwide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy,” Senator Nelson said, “and, finally, force this issue permanently onto the national political agenda.”
Earth Day indeed increased environmental awareness in America, and in July of that year the Environmental Protection Agency was established by special executive order to regulate and enforce national pollution legislation.(1)
An easy way to celebrate Earth Day – and make a difference – is to do something simple – like change your search engine! How easy is that!
Ecosia is a free search engine that you can install on your current browser as your default search engine – or simply use it from their site (so instead of pulling up Google, pull up https://ecosia.org/).
I found it easiest simply to install the add-on so that now Ecosia is my default search engine – I just type my search phrase into the search bar and Ecosia comes up as the default. If necessary you can still check Google, Google Maps and Images, YouTube, Weather and Wikipedia right from the Ecosia search page.
But HOW does it make a difference and ‘save’ rainforest? Watch this video to find out or visit the site for info on how it works.
